Album

Red Headed Stranger is the eighteenth studio album by American outlaw country singer Willie Nelson and released in 1975. After the wide success of his recordings with Atlantic Records, coupled with the negotiating skills of his manager, Neil Reshen, Nelson signed a contract with Columbia Records, a label that gave him total creative control over his works. The concept for the album was inspired by the Tale of the Red Headed Stranger, a song that Nelson used to play as a disc jockey on his program in. After the wide success of Nelson's Red Headed Stranger perhaps is the strangest blockbuster country produced, a concept album about a preacher on the run after murdering his departed wife and her new lover, told entirely with brief song-poems and utterly minimal backing. It's defiantly anticommercial and it demands intense concentration - all reasons why nobody thought it would be a hit, a story related in Chet Flippo's liner notes to the 2000 reissue. It was a phenomenal blockbuster, though, selling millions of copies, establishing Nelson as a superstar recording artist in its own right. Red Headed Stranger Medley - Willie Nelson. Red Headed Stranger, Willie Nelsons 18th studio album, arrived in the world on May Day, 1975, to little fanfare. It would prove to be an ominous year. Two of Nelsons fellow Texans and country music heroes, Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell, would die. Red Headed Stranger remained on the Billboard charts for 120 weeks. It was as if hed written himself a permission slip for the next four decades of his career. On first listen, one studio head wondered aloud whether it had been recorded in Nelsons kitchen. THE outlaw country album, Red Headed Stranger's bare-bones sound was the perfect antidote to the glitzy Nashville Sound dominating the airwaves in the mid-'70s, and lent an understated majesty to this tale of a wandering preacher in the Old West. This deluxe version includes four bonus tracks-three unreleased-plus the classic Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. His Red Headed Stranger is extraordinarily ambitious, cool, tightly controlled. Red Headed Stranger, not unlike Dylans much underrated Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack, is concerned with great universals its heroic songs, somewhat reminiscent in mood of Knockin on Heavens Door and the magnificent instrumental anthems particularly Final Theme of the latter album, seem both vulnerable and inevitable, strapped to the lifeline, equally suitable for weddings or funerals
