Wolfgang Windgassen & Eberhard Wächter & Anja Silja & Franz Crass & Georg Paskuda & Gerd Nienstedt & Josef Greindl & Gerhard Stolze & Bayreuth Festival Chorus & Bayreuth Festival Orchestra & Wolfgang Sawallisch. January 1, 1995. Exclusive Prime pricing. Wagner: Tannhäuser, Act 3 - Wie Todesahnung Dämmrung deckt die Lande by Eberhard Waechter and Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Listen Now . Starring Wolfgang Windgassen, Anja Silja, Grace Bumbry, Eberhard Waechter, Josef Greindl, Gerhard Stolze, and Franz Crass, it is conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch. Mme Silja portrays a touching Princess Elisabeth, her controversial voice heard here in her youth in fact, this was the first of her recordings to be published in America. Bumbry is heard here in her sensational Bayreuth debut as the Schwarze Venus. Among filmed versions of the work, Götz Friedrich's impressive production was televised from Bayreuth in 1978, and featured Spas. Wolfgang Sawallisch, a regular presence in the Bayreuth pit, was just one of the many exemplars culminating in Pierre Boulez of the fastlight-texturedlyrical approach favored in postwar Bayreuth Hans Knappertsbusch and Clemens Krauss being notable exceptions. His rhythms have plenty of spring and he moves things along, but his avoidance of rhetorical afflatus becomes too much of a good thing, as in the maddeningly poker-faced treatment of the Pilgrims Chorus and Elisabethís Act III exit. This Bayreuth Tannhäuser falls into the third category. A recording of this. The chorus sound brilliant, especially in the second act, and Sawallisch controls the whole drama with his characteristic flair for drama. So to the two major cast changes.
