Album

The new album 'It Is What It Is', out now on Brainfeeder: https. Thundercat, OG Ron C, DJ Candlestick. Ycee 's Drank gets the Chopnotslop treatment from Houston's OG Ron C and DJ Candlestick of the Chopstars, the pre-eminent collective dedicated to preserving and continuing the legacy of DJ Screw, catalyst of the chopped and screwed technique. Each one of the original album's 24 cuts is slowed to a stupefying extent with subtle turntablism tactics. They're presented re-sequenced as a continuous mix with humorous and liberally applied shout-outs and interjections like Whatever you sippin', man, pour it up. In its new, remixed form as the companion album Drank, however, Thundercats vision gets a radical overhaul, re-imagined as something akin to a classic smooth-soul quiet storm platter by DJ Candlestick and OG Ron C of the Houston DJ collective The Chopstars. For nearly two decades now, under OG Ron Cs leadership, the Chopstars have expanded on the remix style popularized in Houston in the 90s by the late DJ Screw. Hence the chopped and screwed sub-genre, also known as screw music and chop music. Complete your Thundercat OG Ron C & The Chopstars collection. riferendosi a Drank, CD, Album, BFCD067RT. The Chopstars OG Ron C and DJ Candlestick just dropped Drank, their chopped not slopped take on Thundercats third album Drunk. The duo slowed down Thundercats project, originally released back in February, emphasizing his infamous bass skills in a way that hasn't been heard before. On tracks like Them Changes, Thundercats fast finger-picking and layering gets broken down so listeners can admire the different layers of the production in a new way. I've always been into slowing down creative music and coming up with off the wall ideas to help expand the Chopnotslop

I loved "Drunk", so there is no doubt that the chops provided by Ron C and the Chopstars could do no more than enhance the persepctive of this nerdy-ass musician shouting out everything from Dragon Ball to Mortal Kombat was one that I could instantly relate to. I saw "Drunk" as a time capsule record, which most likely took place in Cat's teen years as he was navigating through the party scene and overall acceptance from his peers. Tracks like "Friend Zone" and "Drink Dat" point to this theory of a young Thunder unsure of his looking glass self when he knows himself to be a Cat. The vibes are spacey, but the audio is throwback funk that would make the 70's proud with a tinge of hip hop that will keep those waiting-for-that-Kendrick-verse's attention throughout the whole record.

Clearly many of you aren't well versed in chopped and screwed music that comes from down here in Houston lol
  • Nalmezar
Instead of paying money for this, just buy the 45 RPM "Drunk" box set and play it at 33 1/3 RPM. Same exact thing.
  • Thomand
Lol you obviously don't appreciate the art of chopped n' screwed music
  • Ndav
I feel like I have been chopped and screwed after having to pay for this. It sounds like my cassette player's batteries are dying but I don't want to change them because I don't have any fresh batteries.
  • Unde
I’m listening on it just drinking beer and find it a masterpiece, am I normal ?
  • Eyalanev
I think you'll find it sounds much better at 45rpm - the only people that could handle it at 33 1/3 rpm (like it states on the label) are listeners on magic mushrooms
  • Briciraz
If you don't like chopped & screwed music, you won't like this. There's nothing new to find here except the track Weakstyle, but it's only about a minute long. And yeah, the tracklisting is different and it's mixed like a DJ mix with no pauses, but that's easy to achieve on your own nowadays. BUT if you DO like chopped & screwed music, this is fantastic. The Chopstars did a fantastic job making this like the classic C&S albums that bumped down south in the late 90's/early 2000's and it complements the songwriting and the grooves on here so well. It's really a matter of what you dig, honestly. No harm in that at all. I'm just happy they took such a crazy idea and went the whole nine yards with it... how many chopped & screwed albums have been released on vinyl?!
  • Buridora
Dude, the version of Bin Laden that's on that is fucking amazing.
  • Haracetys
I agree 100% with this gentleman comment, this is dope, btw my all-time favorite c&s album on vinyl is Three 6 Mafia - Da Unbreakables (Swishahouse remix), for me the c&s version is even better than the "normal" album, and may I had that c&s is much more than rap, even the late DJ Screw himself used to screw "pop" or funk tracks in his legendary mixes !
  • Vetalol
Pretty disappointed in this one...I have the original 4LP box and this does not do it any justice. I would wait for Thundercat to release some new stuff instead of jumping on this one.
  • Ballalune
just play the original lp at 20% downpitch if you want this record
  • Kikora
Excuse me but this has to be the silliest comment I have ever read here...
