A Deeper Understanding is the fourth studio album by American indie rock band The War on Drugs. It was released on August 25, 2017, through Atlantic Records. A Deeper Understanding is his most layered and meticulous album, a twilight world in which to lose yourself. True to the projects nature, the War on Drugs albums arent reinventions, theyre more like a new model in an established line-a Mark IV that adds a few features and continually refines the engineering. On A Deeper Understanding, his first album for Atlantic, the synths get an extra twinkle, the bass-led builds get another octave of rumble, and some songs have a dozen instruments on them where they once might have had seven or eight. Alternative 2017. Marrying the weathered hope of Dylan, Springsteen, and Petty with a studio rats sense of detail, A Deeper Understanding feels like an album designed to get lost in, where lush textures meet plainspoken questions about life, loss, and hope, and where songs stretch out as though they're chasing answers. For as much as Granduciel says in words, its his music that speaks loudest, from the synth-strobing heartland rock of Holding On and Nothing to Find to ballads like Clean Living and Knocked Down, whose spaces are as expansive as any sound. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 2017 Grammys held on Jan. A Deeper Understanding Q&A. The War on Drugs' fourth album is 'A Deeper Understanding. Philadelphia has always been known for lush music from the richly orchestrated proto-disco Philly Sound to the kaleidoscopic psych scene that spawned the War on Drugs. Steadily widening the canvas since co-founder Kurt Viles departure, leader Adam Granduciel achieves full-on sonic rapture with his bands latest LP, an abstract-expressionist mural of synth-pop and heartland rock colored by bruised optimism and some of his most generous, incandescent guitar ever. Which is hardly to say the War on Drugs have become a bo. Throughout A Deeper Understanding, The War On Drugs develop their strengths, taking what they do best and airing it out. A master class in widening scope, the record finds the band unafraid to push their sound in a way that feels bigger than what any of their contemporaries are doing. The band may not ever be gigantic, as 11-minute singles arent that marketable, but theyve made a record that sounds huge. Instead of trying to recreate the heightened catharsis of Lost In The Dream, A Deeper Understanding suggests a viable path forward from that turning point, a journey blown out to widescreen. The War on Drugs' debut for Atlantic Records, A Deeper Understanding, is very much a follow-up to the group's critically acclaimed Top 30 breakthrough Lost in the Dream from three years prior. That album's notoriously meticulous blend of heartland rock influences, Bob Dylan, and a swirling dream rock constructed of Wurlitzers, tape effects, analog synths, and 12-string guitar, just to name a few components, is, if anything, even more expansive here

Wow what a wonderful album great sound engineering on the black vinyl a modern classic...
  • Maldarbaq
Very Very Good pressing of a wonderful album thankfully, apart from the odd crackle it truly sounds awesome

Disc one of my copy is great, crystal clear sounding but disc two...man it looks badly scratched and loves static like no other record I own! fortunately it only has few clicks on "Thinking of a place" It could've been worse, and I'd be pissed off if that would have happened on side one and the clicks were during "Pain"
  • Nuadora
Album of the year for me. Great band, restored my faith in recent music.

Bought the standard black LP after reading the bad comments about the coke bottle clear variant, this is definitely the way to go. This pressing is quiet and sounds fantastic, definitely recommend this

Compared to the last two records and bad pressing: This is great stuff! Great soundstage, guitars buzzing, bass is there as it should and the drums, oh the drums! I'm extremely pleased and this is for sure on the AOTY-list in any case!

Just picked this album up at the store. I already listened to the album a couple of times before and I really love it musically. Love the band, love the music. I'm buying vinyl because of the better sound quality, but in this case I cannot say I'm really impressed. Just compared it to my Apple Music stream and that actually sounds better, much brighter, more dynamics, better soundstage. The LP just sounds a bit flat and sometimes a bit harsh and sometimes even distortion in the treble. The gatefold is beautiful, but overall I'm a bit disappointed.

Brilliant pressing. Wonderful mastering. Incredible album. Definitely an instant classic. Get the plain black EU pressing - it's the bomb!I think the mastering is bloody good. I'm listening to this through a Dynavector 17D2 and it sounds as good as any of my records from the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s. The dynamics are superb. Why, oh why do so many records come without a plastic inner sleeve these days? It would add 2 cents to the cost and ensure the record doesn't get any nasty micro scratches taking it out of the cardboard sleeve.
  • Jeyn
Flat, centered records, just few (barely noticeable) clicls and pops at the begininning of side 2 (during the first, quieter part of strangest thing).Sterling and MPO pressed onto deadwax.I would say this is a very good press overall. The mix definitely lack dynamics but it's (unfortunately) on par with modern days vinyl releases
  • Vetibert
Has anyone else found that the inner sleeves are split, cracked and sometimes bent and creased? Returned 2 copies to Amazon and the third is ok but both inner sleeves are split on the sides and bottom. I find this maddening.

I have four copies. Two coke bottle clear and two on black vinyl. Both clear copies are the same and were purchased at my local indie record shop in the US.. I've only played one-- and disc two has no-fill distortion in several places on it. Disc one is great. Going to try the second copy soon. The blacks each came in a different paper sleeve- yet both are the same MPO pressed vinyl and disc two is dish warped on both copies. One copy has the EU number on the spine, has split seams inside and out, and uses that truly awful gloss paper for the inner sleeves that can cut vinyl like butter. The other black has the US number on the spine and uses a matt finished paper for both cover and inner sleeves-- which looks much nicer that the EU paper. It's still not optimal for a good inner-sleeve. All this and I'm still not sure I have even one clean copy yet. So though the music is excellent, the manufacturing process and quality control are about where you would hope they would NOT be-- spotty as hell.

for anyone who got unlucky with the coke bottle green version and received a bad pressing. don't miss out on this GREAT album and go for the non limited black mpo pressing. no pops, clicks, distoration or non-fill issues. the black EU version (pressed at MPO, France) sounds damn near perfect in my ears.
  • Xellerlu
I second that - standard copy is perfect. Very happy with mine and glad I didn't go for the limited edition.
  • Ironrunner
It is a good pressing but the first I received (with creased bashed up inner sleeves had non fill all the way across side one. My exchanged copy doesn't have this but the inner sleeves look second hand.
  • CrazyDemon
Its still early to give a good review on this one, but press wise, seems like this EU version is up the expectation. Flat record, no clicks or pops with a rather bass driven sound stage.
