What made this album so entirely captivating, was that it stood in dreamy juxtaposition to all the was happening during the psychedelic Summer of Love back in 1967. Even today it’s easy to get lost in the smooth syncopated melodic sounds of Sweet Rain, an album that should probably be on your list of ‘first records’ to listen to by Stan Getz, as it glows with a high level of consistency, flowering with lyrical improvisations and effortlessly meshing the forward thinking and transitions of post-bop with the cool toned balladry and stunning dexterity of his Bossa Nova visions.

More than anything, Getz understood the nature of be-bop, where his deep rich tones were envied by many. On this outing, Stan’s most notable change in musical style sneaks up on you and is exemplified as he moves from track one to track two, where Stan immediately steps in with a simply elegant swinging number that’s atmospheric intoxicatingly lively and breathtaking. Sweet Rain should be considered the first album of the second half of his career, as it does nothing less than epitomize the result and satisfaction to be drawn from these smaller ensembles, ethereal tones and his entirely unassuming formats.

Sweet Rain is a short but emancipated masterpiece that finds Stan and his smooth tenor sax fronting a group of younger players, with Chick Corea holding down the piano much like one would expect from Bill Evans, along with Grady Tate on drums and Ron Carter on bass. The most dynamic change here is that producer Creed Taylor managed to take Stan through his most commercially successful period with Verve Records, where Getz delicately and expertly balances his past coolness with the light rain dappled shimmering and warm Bossa Nova that’s been paired with a mildly tougher idiosyncratic notion of post-bop.

Strangely, Stan’s luscious solos are nearly taken for granted here on Sweet Rain, as many listeners by now were so familiar with his playing that his notes became mere extensions of listener’s breaths. It’s been said that Getz was often embarrassed as to how beautifully he played, and would purposely go to great pains to sound tougher, yet here with these young jazz revolutionaries, these cats manage to let Stan be Stan, resounding with a freshness that’s enticingly nimble and flawless. That said, Stan seems to find no place to settle in on this album, appearing to be darting here and there, not so much as if he’s looking for something, but opening and closing doors to assure himself that all’s well.

Sweet Rain produced a number of songs that would become jazz standards, celebratory manifestations of responsive joy and is a not to be missed album.

*** The Fun Facts: The child on the back cover is Stan’s son from his second marriage, with there front cover featuring his wife and daughter.

Due to the nature of Stan’s music, most fans thought he was as mellow and gracious as his music, where nothing could have been further from the truth. Stan quickly took to drugs and alcohol, addicted to heroin, though morphine was his drug of choice, even robbing a pharmacy, though without the gun he claimed to have, in Seattle back in 1954. While he cleaned up after a ten year habit that began at sixteen, he was a lifelong alcoholic, with his death being the result of that bewildering aspect of his life. He was also not a pleasant man, subject to fits of violence to both his wives and his children, all the regardless of the album art images.
