Genre: Folk. Add Tag. Your Review. Lily-O, an album of reimagined folk songs by singerfiddlerbanjoistguitarist Sam Amidon, was produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson and features jazz guitaristcomposer Bill Frisell, a longtime hero of Amidon's, along with Amidon's other frequent collaborators, bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Chris Vatalaro. The album showcases his ability to transform music, says NPR. Every little unexpected twist shimmers with originality. His highly personal approach opens a window on the American past and lets us feel it like nothing else around. The centerpiece of Sam Amidons fifth proper record is a nine-minute song called Lily-O , which opens with Amidon singing a lengthy a cappella epilogue about three suitors courting three ladies. Its austerely quiet until two minutes into the song, when a second instrument enters-a single crackle of electric guitar, sharp and splintery, like a log sparking in a fireplace. Amidon is settling in for a long story that is less about marriage and more about betrayal, violence, death, and loss. Lily-O , we soon learn, is a murder ballad, with one brutal stabbing followed by a long list of bequeath. Lily-O - Sam Amidon.
