For Two Sides of Peter Banks, the ex-guitarist from Yes gathered an impressive group of guest musicians, including Genesis' Phil Collins and Steve Hackett and King Crimson's John Wetton. Most importantly, the whole album was written and recorded with Netherlands guitarist Jan Akkerman of Focus. A brilliant solo album that is laden with dynamism, melody and a full of what made Yes such a unique band from its genesisi. with Banks at the 6 strings. Banks takes helm here performing on not only his expected main instrument the electric guitar but in addition acoustic guitar, synthesizers and other various keyboards. Ex-Yes and Flash guitarzan Peter Banks really spilled his beans here , putting together a VERY original album with his mates from Flash no Yes members invited, ah, such bitterness and a few choice guests: the fuzzy bass of John Wetton , the rythmic gymnastics of Uncle Phil Collins back in the days when he was a gloriously talented drummer and , last. A brilliant solo album that is laden with dynamism, melody and a full of what made Yes such a unique band from its genesis(i.e. with Banks at the 6 strings). Banks takes helm here performing on not only his expected main instrument the electric guitar but in addition acoustic guitar, synthesizers and other various keyboards. Who would have thought Banks was a multi-instrumentalist!
The music is at times spartan, spacey, classical and then takes an about face towards progressive rock driven by the rhythm section laced with intertwining time signature changes. What I enjoy about Bank's is stubbornness to submit to composing in any one particular style and in essence the music does not feel forced nor a bombastic statement of musical pomposity. A truly brilliant release that will always have a spot in my library for return listens.
