as you know Patti Smith played the last show at CBGB's Sunday night, October 15th, 2006. I figured there'd be a bunch of special guests - at least for the encore - or maybe a secret opener. I say painful because it just meant more time trapped in place at this extremely crowded, long, bathroom-less show. I say bathroom-less because they closed the downstairs bathrooms - you had to go next door. The show was great - don't get me wrong, but it wasn't exactly comfortable. Patti Smith finished the clubs final concert with her ballad Elegie, growing teary-eyed as she read a list of dead punk-rock musicians and advocates. Patti Smith, left, and Lenny Kaye on Sunday night at Segev for The New York Times. The songs came from her debut album, Horses, released in 1975, when Ms. Smith and CBGB were making each other famous. She was a poet turned rocker, tapping and then redoubling the energy she found in basic three-chord songs. Blondie and Talking Heads also found fame after performing at the club which helped launch US punk music. But a dispute over rent rises led owner Hilly Kristal to lose his lease, more than 30 years after the club opened. Patti Smith said CBGB was more a state of mind than a venue and other clubs would replace it. We can have CBGB in our hearts, but the new generation is going to have their own places to play, said the 60-ye. Last night hundreds of would-be farewellers packed the Bowery in the hopes of attending the Patti Smith gig that, after all that, would be the Last Show Ever at CBGB. News vans dotted the block. The line stretched around the corner. Suspiciously immaculate - and, naturally, ticket-free - young punks protested their situation loudly at the door. The line had formed early some reports put its start at Sunday morning, but it failed to move even as word the show had started rippled back through the increasingly impatient cr.
