Album
Not to be filed under Merzbow proper, it's attributed to Merzbow's human incarnation, Masami Akita, who appears here alongside equally disruptive experimentalist Russell Haswell. Due to labelmates like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, this will be the most widely distributed Merzbow album. Whether or not you're looking for a place to start, Satanstornade will be the one in your local record store. Perhaps there's been a climate change maybe those pissed-off rap-rock kids in bubble coats are going to get even angrier when they get drafted. Maybe they'll need something more. Satanstornade is a studio album by Masami Akita and Russell Haswell, who had previously performed together under the name Satanstornade. The music was completely improvised and was mixed live direct to stereo at the house of a friend of Haswell. On the sleeve all of the text and logos except the barcode are printed with a clear varnish, requiring one to hold it at an angle to read. Album 2001 4 Songs. Satanstornade Masami Akita. free to Masami Akita & Russell Haswell Satanstornade Unlock The Mysteries Of The Sun, Fend Off Your Miserable Grief and more. 4 tracks . Unlike some Masami Akita's recordings where the sounds growl, churn and grind in a loud but dispassioned way, this 4-track tour-de-force leaps out of your headphones, explodes in your ears, splinters, transfixes and mummifies you into a terrifying blind of electronic hell where even angels fear to tread: The static stutters uncontrollably, the bass loops itself over and over. I don't hesitate for a moment when I say that the Satanstornade album is one of the finest releases ever to be tagged noise as well as easily the most revolutionary product that Warp has put out in the 21st century. Masami Akita is the Godfather of Japanese noise. In 2000, under the name Merzbow, he released a 50 CD boxed set called the Merzbox, and has released more than 200 recordings to date. He has also written scholarly workson subjects such as Japanese bondage and post war Japanese architecture. This is their first recording together after performing live on several occasions under the Satanstornade name. including the Sonic Youth curated All Tomorrows Parties in Los Angeles. Instructions on the sleeve suggest headphone listening at maximum volume. One suspects that notorious avantist Masami Merzbow Akita and Aphex ally Russell Haswell believe that Lou Reeds Metal Machine Music is for lightweights. Their first album together, Satanstornade features some very fancy knives on the sleeve and applies the aesthetics of death metal to improvised electronic noise. The desire to be extreme can be a little wearying, but mostly this is gripping stuff: as meticulous as it is brutal a chal enge for headbangers and useful mood music for those romantic nights in the abattoir.
