Zeppelin IV 2001 - Out Of Phase, Various Artists - Led Zeppelin Tribute. Led Zeppelin IV. Encompassing heavy metal, folk, pure rock & roll, and blues, Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album is a monolithic record, defining not only Led Zeppelin but the sound and style of '70s hard rock. Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their majestic hard rock with a mystical, rural English folk that gives the record an epic scope. Even at its most basic - the muscular, traditionalist Rock and Roll - the album has a grand sense of drama, which is only deepened by Robert Plant's burgeoning obsession with mythology, religion, and the occult. Producerguitarist Jimmy Page had a real ear for sonic textures like the soaring orchestral crescendo here on When the Levee Breaks that changed forever how hard rock would be heard and recorded. Technically, the fourth Led Zeppelin album is untitled as Jimmy Page got angry at the mixed response gathered by predecessor Led Zeppelin III. Still, many names over the years have accumulated, most commonly Led Zeppelin IV given the previous three albums were numbered. Another is ZoSo , after one of the four symbols representing the band members that show up. Led Zeppelin IV is also commonly called The Fourth Album, The Hermit, Runes, Untitled, and Four Symbols. In fact, the original cover had no words on the outside at all, and only had symbols on the inner sleeve and record label. It might seem a bit incongruous to say that Led Zeppelin - a band never particularly known for its tendency to understate matters - has produced an album which is remarkable for its low-keyed and tasteful subtlety, but thats just the case here. The march of the dinosaurs that broke the ground for their first epic release has apparently vanished, taking along with it the splattering electronics of their second effort and the leaden acoustic moves that seemed to weigh down their third.
