Joseph Joachim Raff Composer. 5 in E 'Lenore', Work. Bamberg Symphony Orchestra Orchestra, Hans Stadlmair Conductor, Torsten Schreier Musical Direction. Happiness of Love: Allegro. 177, was composed by Joachim Raff between 1870 and 1872. It is generally regarded as his best symphony and the most frequently performed and recorded today. It was inspired by Gottfried August Bürger's ballad Lenore, set during the Seven Years' War. The symphony came during a time of great success for Raff. He already achieved fame with his Third and Fourth symphonies, as well as the opera Dame Kobold, so the orchestras were eager to perform it. The premiere. Raff's Symphony No. 5 is his best-known work and the one that coheres best for me. It just may be the major work with which Raff can claim a permanent place in the repertoire. Although this is a program symphony Berlioz's. Raff could be discursive and his ideas could spread about willy-nilly he liked to write fast: imagine saying that about Brahms, but here his themes are laid out in a more or less declarative and logical sequence and discursive episodes are kept to a minimum. Things seems more symphonic here than in Raff's other works
