Album

If, often referred to as If 1, is the eponymous debut album by the English Jazz rock band If. It was released in 1970 on the Island Records label in the UK and Capitol Records in the US. The original artwork and the if logo, which was an award-winning design, were by CCS Advertising Associates. It was re-issued as a CD first in 1995 by an obscure label OSA, then in 1997 by Island and finally in 2006 on Repertoire Records with two bonus tracks and liner notes by UK music critic Chris Welch. Released in the same year as their first album in 1970, If 2' saw English jazzfusionrock band If deliver a follow-up album that was just as good, if just a little more instantly approachable than the debut. One of the things that makes this album such a winner is that, in addition to the obviously top-notch musical displays and improvisational skills of the musicians, the band have crafted those elements to a selection of accessible and melodic tunes, without really being any more overly commercial. As If, 's sixth studio album, is very much a reaction to that crisis of identity, a mostly successful attempt at re-establishing themselves as the premier suppliers of fun, kinetic, sprawling indie disco. There's nothing quite as special as Pardon My Freedom on As If, but opening track All U Writers delivers the album's first chuckle amidst it's pounding dance beat: I knew I shouldn't have kissed him in a Chevrolet, sings a plaintive female voice, as Offer's distorted and stuttering vocals provide the song's structure. There's immediately a sense that aren't necessarily trying to recreate past greatness but are pushing their sound and style in a new direction
