Thank Christ for the Bomb is the third studio album recorded by The Groundhogs, in 1970, originally released by Liberty Records. It was engineered by Martin Birch who had previously worked on albums by Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green. It entered the UK Melody Maker album charts at number 27 on 20 June 1970, and had a total of 3 entries in that chart. The image of Pete Cruickshank on the left of the cover is adapted from photograph Q 1 in the Imperial War Museum's photograph archive. Thank Christ for the Bomb was the first Groundhogs album to indicate that the group had a lifespan longer than the already-fading British blues boom suggested. It was also the first in the sequence of semi-conceptual masterpieces that the group cut following their decision to abandon the mellow blues of their earlier works and pursue the socially aware, prog-inflected bent that culminated with 1972's seminal Who Will Save the World album. Completely divorcing himself from the blues, the album Thank Christ For The Bomb, released in may 1970, consists of nine tracks the main theme covers both World Wars beginning with the soldiers in the First World War and ending with the nuclear bomb in the Second, but the sympathies in the message carries through to this day. The third album Thank Christ for the Bomb in 1970 signalled a departure from raw R&B into more adventurous territory and was the first Hogs album to see significant sales. TCftB is strongly themed on Tony McPhees pacifist sentiments and the belief widely held at the time that only the existence of the atomic bomb prevented a recurrence of the mass carnage of apocalyptic wars in the early 20th century Since that day its been stalemateeveryones scared to obliterate and is loosely in the category of that odd.
