From the Mars Hotel is the seventh studio album by rock band the Grateful Dead. It was mainly recorded in April 1974, and originally released June 27, 1974. It was the second album by the band on their own Grateful Dead Records label. From the Mars Hotel came less than one year after their previous album, Wake of the Flood, and was the last before the band's then-indefinite hiatus from live touring, begun in October 1974. United Artists Records, The Dead's distributor, issued its first two post-Warners studio albums as a double-record set in England. I've often thought that the Grateful Dead entered the sessions for Wake of The Flood with an attitude of having something to prove. Excellent album, Bob Weir suite is fantastic I bought most of 50 anniversary albums bar from Mars Hotel which is out of stock This is not right. Read more. It was recorded between August 4 and September 1, 1973 and originally released on October 15, 1973. It was the first release under the band's own label, Grateful Dead Records, after fulfilling their contract with Warner Bros. It was their first full-length studio album in nearly three years, since 1970's American Beauty. It was also the first studio album without Ron Pigpen McKernan, who had recently died. His absence and new. Though the Deads previous album, Wake of the Flood, found the band venturing into jazz fusion and art rock, their 1974 follow-up featured a rootsier, more concise batch of songs. Pianist Keith Godchaux is at his best on the boogying steamroller U. Blues, while Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter unveil some of their finest fruits as a songwriting team on the mysterious China Doll and the Band-like Ship of Fools. First US pressings of this album have the word AUTHENTIC embossed down the left hand side of the front sleeve - this was at the direction of the band due to the widespread counterfeiting of the band's previous album, Grateful Dead - Wake Of The Flood, the first on their newly formed label Grateful Dead Records. The provenance of the tape used for this pressing could not be verified, so the banner on the cover reads simply Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab.
