He played bebop, hard bop, and post-bop styles from the early 1960s onwards. His unmistakable and influential tone contributed to new perspectives for modern jazz and bebop. Hubbard started playing the mellophone and trumpet in his school band at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Trumpeter Lee Katzman, former sideman with Stan Kenton, recommended that he begin studying at the Arthur. Freddie Hubbard's Impulse album called 'The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard' was recorded on 2 July 1962. The album had liner notes by the esteemed jazz writer Dan Morgenstern. He said: In an era of jazz dominated by the saxophonists, Hubbard's command of the horn is almost a throwback to the trumpet-reigned 1930s. The best jazz trumpeters in history have been at the centre of almost every major revolution in jazz. uDiscover Music brings you the Top 50. Freddie Hubbard - Blue Note Records.
