The Queen Elisabeth Competition Dutch: Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd, French: Concours musical international Reine Élisabeth is an international competition for career-starting musicians held in Brussels. The competition is named after Queen Elisabeth of Belgium 18761965. It is a competition for classical violinists from 1937 to present, pianists from 1938, singers from 1988 and cellists from 2017. It also used to hold international competitions for composers from 1953 to 2012. Emil Gilels, Radio Symphony Orchestra of the USSR, Karl Eliasberg: Grande polonaise brillante, Op. 22, Concerto No. 2 in G Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 22: III. Presto, Concerto No. 22: II. Allegretto scherzando и другие песни. The pianist Aldo Ciccolini, who has died at the age of 89, was famed for his pearly, translucent tone and nimble fingerwork. Though highly regarded by his pupils, who included Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Artur Pizarro and Nicholas Angelich, and by other musicians with whom he performed, notably the singers Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Nicolai Gedda and the violinist Jacques Thibaud, he never quite entered the big league of international soloists. Ciccolini was a performer of rare sensitivity who sought and achieved infinitesimal shadings of dynamic and tonal colour. Rubinstein has worthy would-be competitors here-Gieseking, Gilels and Andsnes-but to my ears Rubinstein's remains overall the most genial and poetic reading of these perennially popular gems. Volume 13 is the standard deluxe-digipak digital transfer of these venerable mono tracks, and the vintage sound is mellow and perfectly acceptable. Emil Gilels plays Songs without Words, Op. 38, No. 6 Duetto. Gilels 1916-1985 was one of the 20th centurys foremost pianists. Like many Russian artists of his era, he was virtually unknown in the West until the cultural thaw of the mid-50s. Though Gilels repertoire was far-ranging, the music of the German Romantic era benefited particularly from his burnished tone, strong technique and unfussy yet elegant musicianship. The 1983 recital preserved on this DVD is devoted to the music of Schumann, Brahms, and Mendelssohn, including Brahmss Paganini Variations Book I and Schum.
