While good for background noise, Blacklight blacks out as an overall album.
It is customary that an album have a built-in flow to its song progression, taking the listener on a sort of journey from song to song, carrying them to each next track with ease. U.K. glitch trio dRAWBACKS does not seem to agree with this formula, and instead has given us the album Blacklight. The album has a scattering of strong moments, but overall, Blacklight has a consistent problem with providing a common flow of song type, choosing rather to change styles twice during the course of the album and poorly arranging the songs so as to lack flow and overall form.
Blacklight does have its very strong moments. Songs such as "Fused," "Nineteen Ways," and "Lowlife" definitely stand out with their breakbeat undertones and overall club atmosphere. Each of these songs rise and fall at just the right moments, creating a sphere of entrancing and overwhelming sound that is absolutely captivating. Other tracks such as "Whitelight" and "Persian Ghosts," while falling short of the standards set by the aforementioned tracks, stand out in their own way, creating a glitch and technopunk sound that, when combined with dRAWBACKS' '80s/Brit-punk styled vocals, is entirely unique to the band.
However, most tracks on Blacklight cannot compare to the five standout tracks, and a quarter of the tracks simply sound homespun or underthought. Slow, dragging songs such as "Vanishing" or "Blacklight" are introduced far too early in the order, long before the band has a chance to establish the style of the album. The line "All I wanna do is waste my time" rings very true in "Blacklight," which drags tremendously and completely kills the flow that the first two tracks started to establish.
Most of the album, particularly tracks like "Game Theory" and "Animales," have the feel of background noise - songs overheard at a party or in a scenario where music should be playing. They're kind of catchy if you overhear it, but no one's really listening to it.
Blacklight ultimately falls short in the spectrum of electronic music albums, but certainly has noteworthy tracks that are worth listening to via the dRAWBACKS' MySpace or official band site.
