This song, written by Abel Meeropol and performed by many artists but most notably, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, is a dark and profound song about the lynching of African Americans in the Southern United States during the Jim Crow Era. In the lyrics, black victims are portrayed as strange fruit, as they hang from trees, rotting in the sun, blowing in the wind, and becoming food for crows upon being burned. It was a protest song that Billie Holiday very bravely performed under grave threats and at high personal cost. Album: The Billie Holiday Story 1939. Billie Holiday had just quit Artie Shaw's band and was the featured attraction at the club, and Gordon brought the song to her attention and suggested she sing it. Holiday played to an integrated audience at the Cafe Society, and her version popularized the song. In 1971, Meeropol said, I wrote 'Strange Fruit' because I hate lynching, I hate injustice, and I hate the people who perpetuate it. Victims of lynchings were people who were marginalized from society, and most were black men. Strange Fruit is the second solo album by Trijntje Oosterhuis and was released on March 22, 2004 on Blue Note records. Trijntje's solo debut album was well received, and consisted mainly of pop ballads not reflective of her personal fondness for jazz. During 2003 Trijntje made a tour with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Houdini's playing covers of Billie Holiday and George Gershwin. Trijntje decided to record the January 7, 2003 concert in the Concertzaal in Tilburg and the January 8, 2003 concert. Strange Fruit is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday. Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
