Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. von Karajan's 1984 set of Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies was the fourth complete set he had recorded, and its reception among critics was mixed. Usually ranked below Karajan's famous 1962-1963 set, to which many listeners give top honors among all recordings of Beethoven symphonies, this late cycle has a bright and incisive orchestral sound and seems to have a nervous edge, but because the tempos are in many instances slower and the pacing is variable, it lacked the urgency and excitement of the earlier performances. Herbert von Karajan had taken the reins of the Berlin Philharmonic in the mid 1950's, and by the time of these recordings 1962 he had already transformed his orchestra into a smooth, virtuoso ensemble capable of remarkable technical execution and an unrivaled beauty of sound. Karajan recorded the set of Beethoven symphonies a total of four times 5 if one counts the filmed performances of the late 60's-early 70's, and although his general interpretations did not change much over the years, this 1962-63 set is probably his best overall version, despite the sound limitations. The great maestro Herbert von Karajan and Berliner philharmoniker have always been feast for ears and all other human senses So, listeners must just listen and enjoy.
